Meiyum Unmayum Poiyum

August 18, 2011

Lets analyze these words Mei, Unmai and Poi meaning Truth, Fact and False in Tamil.

The word Mei often referred to Truth in Tamil,  To know the literal meaning of this word, we will split up

Me+i – ஒரு இடத்தை சூழ்ந்து + எளிதாக + நாம் அறிவது. It literally means, That which we find  about a thing/place by going close to it.

For example if a box is there, to know the “mei” about the box, we should go near, open it and see. The nearest English word i can think of is “Truth”
Kural : எப்பொருள் யார்யார்வாய்க் கேட்பினும் அப்பொருள்
மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு.

Meaning: From whomsoever you got whatever info,
Its wise to try and seek the truthness of the info.

“Mei” is also used to refer Skin/Body, that when only when (go near) touched we can sense(find out).

Another Interesting thing about Mei , in Tamil language we have Body letters, (Mei Eluthukkal),  For those letters we need to take the  Uyir(Vowels) nearer to the Mei(Body), to  result in proper words and sounds.

The another word for  “Truth” is “Unmai“,
Unmai = “Inside + we get/see +  within a place”

So it refers the fact, “thats there inside”.

மெய்(Truth) என்பது “அருகில் சென்று அறிந்து வருவது”, உண்மை (fact) என்பது “அங்கே இருப்பது அது தான்”.

Now lets see the word Poi meaning “Lie” , splitting this we get
P+o+i = “Many + Comes united  + We identify that”,  Meaning, பல ஒன்றாய் வந்தால் அறியப்படுவது.
so it literally means that when comes more and more unitedly we can identify its nature, that its false, for example,

If what I am telling here is a lie, will be known only  if  you enquire the same with many people, comparing others opinion.
