What is Ignorance? The Kural teaches us.

I will try to explain  some of the verses  from the great “Thirukural” related to “Lack of Knowledge” or “Ignorance”,

Some of the Kurals below, i think were mistranslated,
Kural 841:அறிவின்மை இன்மையுள் இன்மை பிறிதின்மை இன்மையா வையா துலகு.
knowledge less /Ignorance is what we call the real poverty, Lack of anything else
will not be even called as poverty.

Kural 842: அறிவிலான் நெஞ்சுவந்து ஈதல் பிறிதியாதும் இல்லை பெறுவான் தவம்.
It is nothing but luck of the receiver, when an Ignorant person can give something out of their heart.

Kural 843: அறிவிலார் தாந்தம்மைப் பீழிக்கும் பீழை செறுவார்க்கும் செய்தல் அரிது.
Ignorant/Knowledge-less people can do more harm to themselves than their enemies.

Kural 844: வெண்மை எனப்படுவ தியாதெனின் ஒண்மை உடையம்யாம் என்னும் செருக்கு.
The complete ignorance is when one thinks, he is the only one who knows everything.

Kural 845: கல்லாத மேற்கொண் டொழுகல் கசடற வல்லதூஉம் ஐயம் தரும்.
Involving in a job without knowing anything about it (and failing),
Will then raise doubts when he is involved in something he knows well.

Kural: 846 அற்றம் மறைத்தலோ புல்லறிவு, தம்வயின் குற்றம் மறையா வழி.
Hiding ones real knowledge/capability is ignorance(lack of knowledge),
that will bring him the blame later.
ஒருவர் தன்னுடைய உண்மையான தகுதியை மறைத்தல் கூடாது,
அது அவர்மேல் குற்றம் வருவதற்கான வழி ஆகி விடும்.

Arram=What one doesnt have/know.

Kural:847 : அருமறை சோரும் அறிவிலான் செய்யும்
பெருமிறை தானே தனக்கு.

நல்லவை தரும் அறிவில்லாதவன் செயலும், அவனுக்கு அது பெரும் பயன் தான் அன்றி வேறில்லை.
Meaning: A person without knowledge extracting great hidden things,
is indeed a great goodness/blessing for him.

Kural 848: ஏவவும் செய்கலான் தான்தேறான் அவ்வுயிர் போஒம் அளவுமோர் நோய்.
We cannot expect a person without self initiative,
to do a work by our command, He is having a lifelong disease.

Kural 849: காணாதான், காட்டுவான் தான்காணான், காணாதான்
கண்டானாம் தான்கண்ட வாறு.

தானே அறியாமல் ஒருவன் ஒருவனுக்கு ஒன்றை பற்றி பயிற்றுவிக்க முற்பட்டான்,

அதையும் புரிந்து கொண்டேன் என்று  சொல்வானாம் அந்த மற்றொருவன்.

A person without proper knowledge/understanding, explaining a concept/something to another person,

The other say ‘Well I understood’.

(Thiruvalluvar in this Kural was joking about different perceptions/understanding
capacity of different people.)

Kural 850 :உலகத்தார் உண்டென்பது இல்லென்பான் வையத்து அலகையா வைக்கப் படும்.
One who is refusing to accept what is already a proved fact,
will be considered to be a disturbance to this world.
